Vesterbro is one of the coolest neighbourhoods in the world. It was actually awarded this title in 2017! So safe to say it’s the coolest place to live in Copenhagen. Vesterbro has undergone a drastic transformation, the neighbourhood as we know it today really started to form over the last 20 years. A historically overlooked area is now one of the most coveted neighbourhoods to live in Copenhagen. It’s a very diverse district, home to people from all over the world and also suited to everyone from creatives and students to families and retirees - there isn’t one typical ‘type’ of resident in this neighbourhood! Vesterbro offers a little bit of everything, great food, bars, shops, and very close proximity to the downtown area without the hustle and bustle at your doorstep.

Vesterbro perfectly encapsulates all that is cool and trendy - we wouldn’t surprised if it was actually used in the dictionary to help define those words. However, it’s a special kind of cool, it’s both effortless and aspirational with a totally approachable and welcoming atmosphere. Everything you love about hip neighbourhoods, none of the pretentiousness; it is Denmark after all, and they just don’t really do that here. It’s as though all 70,000 residents met and handcrafted the perfect laid back, but lively atmosphere. 

Vesterbro has undergone some sizable transformations in the last few decades, driven by substantial urban renewal projects. Up until the ’90s, Vesterbro was known as Copenhagen’s red-light district, with a reputation for clandestine activities. It has since transformed into the lively, creative hot spot we know and love today.

Vesterbro is located to the west of the city centre, you can walk or bike downtown in less than five minutes. It’s a relatively small neighbourhood spanning from the central station to a large park (Vestre Kirkegard) and surrounded by the harbourfront, Frederiksberg, and the city centre. As you can imagine, it’s a highly coveted place to live and its recent transformation means it’s packed with diversity! 



Long answer short, everyone! This neighbourhood is composed of long-time residents who have watched the full transformation of the neighbourhood and new residents who’ve worked hard to secure housing in the covested area. You’re sure to see artists, business people, as well as small families and retirees. It’s also diverse in terms of nationalities, 24% of people living in Vesterbro have foreign backgrounds. If you compare residents of Vesterbro, they may live quite different lives, but they all share the independent spirit that brings the neighbourhood together. 


No two days are quite the same in Vesterbro as it’s a cultural hotspot! This neighbourhood is buzzing with activity, from boutique shops and restaurants to the hottest music venues. You can enjoy this neighbourhood year-round and take in the variety of events that cycle through. Vesterbro is home to many of Copenhagen’s iconic sites, from Vega and the Meatpacking district to the historical Carlsberg brewery. 

The atmosphere of the neighbourhood is very creative, those that live here enjoy tons of cafes, restaurants and shops. There is also a good amount of green space with the large park, Vestre Kirkegard, and expansive green space that was recently (2017) added on Sønder Boulevard. As it’s a high-density neighbourhood, these outdoor spaces are very welcomed and heavily used. When it’s sunny (or just not raining) you will see tons of locals hanging out on Sønder Boulevard and on the patios of cafes and restaurants. Despite the fact that there is always lots to do in Vesterbro, it has a very relaxed pace and laidback atmosphere.


Vesterbro is characterised by its many small and winding streets - something you don’t see in most of Copenhagen’s neighbourhoods. Most of the buildings in Vesterbro follow the classic five-storey Copenhagen apartment building style that you see in the rest of the city. As an old industrial area that made extensive preservation efforts, there are lots of historical buildings and areas to enjoy. If you want to live in Vesterbro, apartments are essentially the only option, due to the density you won’t see any standalone homes!

One of the best things about Vesterbro is that you will never be bored there! In addition to the many points of interest in the area, there are also events cycling through, such as concerts at Vega, new exhibits at art galleries, and new restaurants to try! It also attracts a wide variety of people, so if you’re hanging out in the meatpacking district you’ll be in good company. Here are some of our favourite places to check out! 



Værnedamsvej (better known as ‘Little Paris’)


This street is charming and as soon as you arrive you will see exactly why it’s calling ‘Little Paris.’ Brimming with cosy cafes and wine bars, you can enjoy sitting on one of the many patios and watch the cyclers pass by. It also has charming speciality shops to check out.   


You’ve probably heard about this one, but it’s always worth a mention. Hanging out in the meatpacking is almost mandatory if you’re living in Vesterbro. There are lots of great bars (like NoHo and Jolene Bar) and restaurants, you can enjoy this area rain or shine, but it’s always something special in nice weather! 




You’ve got to appreciate living in a city where you can just swim on the waterfront! Havnebadet is one of the best ocean pools in Copenhagen. In the summer tons of Vesterbro residents hang out here to cool off, some even go for a quick lunch break swim!




These are the main green spaces in Vesterbro, rest assured that they are well-loved! Go for a long walk in Vestre Kirkegard or hang out with some beers on Sønder Boulevard.


Visit the home of (probably) the best beer in the world. There is almost nothing more Danish than Carlsberg, and Vesterbro is the home of it all! The historic brewery site has been transformed into a lively neighbourhood. Check out the restaurants and parks, make sure not to miss the brewery itself!

Vesterbro has a long history with deep roots as the entertainment district of the city. The area was established in the 16th century and what was once farmland and mills, slowly transformed into the Vesterbro we know and love today. 

Vesterbro’s transformation into an urban area began in the mid-1800s, like most of Copenhagen’s neighbourhoods outside the downtown core. Vesterbrogade, a central street in Vesterbro, was historically the main passageway into Copenhagen; making the area a popular hub for railways and home to Copenhagen’s central train station (which is still in use today). All this activity also meant that Vesterbro became the logical location for trade and merriment!  

As Vesterbro continued to develop in the 1900’s it was home to a diverse working-class group, giving the area a rebellious and independent spirit that still persists today. It was natural that during the Denmarks occupation in WWII, this neighbourhood was the heart of the resistance movement. Istedgade, perhaps the most famous street in Vesterbro, was the centre of this, even today you still see stickers and banners in Vesterbro saying “Istedgade overgiver sig aldrig” meaning, ‘Istedgade never surrenders’. This same street also came to be known as the red-light district of Copenhagen; today it’s transformed into a street full of restaurants, bars, and is one of the few areas in the city which is busy day and night! 

Vesterbro has undergone dramatic transformations becoming the area it is today. Substantial urban renewal projects began in the 1980’s, which addressed the infrastructure and also the residents that had traditionally struggled throughout much of the 1900’s. The area has become one of the most desirable places to live in Copenhagen, its independent spirit and classic cool has persisted - a nod to its working-class roots.

In fact, over a quarter of Norrebro’s inhabitants don’t have a Danish background! So many cultures form the fabric of Norrebro, so it’s no wonder that this neighbourhood is full of amazing restaurants, cafes, and bars; serving flavours from all over the globe. There are tons of shops to visit and lots of art to take in, both in galleries and on the streets. It’s the most densely populated neighbourhood in Copenhagen. Living here means you can experience a little slice of the world every day, without leaving the lovely Danish capital.

Norrebro is an intriguing and welcoming neighbourhood, home to all kinds of people. It’s a very distinct area of Copenhagen, you will feel it when you arrive! You get the sense that each of the 80,000 residents has contributed a little piece to it. What will you add? 

It’s located to the north of the city centre, a quick bike or walk will have you downtown in no time. This means you will find fewer tourists and more locals, giving it an authentic feel. It also has great metro and train connections should you be venturing out of the city. 

Norrebrogade is the main street in Norrebro, and though it is busy, it’s mostly bike and bus traffic so it’s still enjoyable to walk down. The area was built out slowly from the city centre, so it doesn’t quite follow the traditional grid layout that you see in newer areas of the city. There are plenty of quiet side streets tucked away to explore! 

Norrebro, neighbours Frederiksberg, Osterbro, and the famous Copenhagen Lakes. There is quite a bit of green space surrounding and inside of the district, not to mention some highly coveted lakefront!


Residents of Norrebro come from many different backgrounds, but they share a certain je n'est ce quoi. Or ‘jeg ved ikke’ if you want to be Danish - though it doesn’t have quite the same ring to it. Despite all the different backgrounds, occupations, and lifestyles, Norrebro’s residents share the common thread of spending their time in a diverse and active community! In general, you will find lots of young adults, students, and small families living in Norrebro.


Norrebro is a buzzing district year-round, if you take to the streets there’s never a dull moment. In fact, it’s home to the most cycled street in Copenhagen (maybe even the world)! Every day about 40,000 bikers cross Dronning Lousie’s Bridge, which is the main access point to Norrebro, and the start of Norrebrogade. How do we know that? There’s a digital meter on the bridge counting bikers each day of course!

As an active international neighbourhood, there’s always a wide variety of things to do. You can be sure to find plenty of cafes, shops, and restaurants which are unlike anything you’ve tried before. Cafe patios are often teeming with locals (year-round because Danes know how to make it hygge) socialising with friends and watching the bikes go by. There are also lots of bars and small music venues, which makes the Norrebro district a popular starting point for Copenhageners getting ready for a night out. There are also a number of one of a kind boutiques lining sprawling pedestrian streets. Norrebro’s streets are lined with brick apartment buildings, the classic four-floor style you see throughout most of Copenhagen. It’s a human-centric district that blends residential and commercial space quite well, with shops on street level and homes above. Though there are plenty of independent shops, you won’t find large chain stores or malls here. 

In terms of architecture, there are not many modern buildings in this district, but you will find most Norrebro apartments have been updated and well maintained. Apartments in Norrebro are by far the most common housing style, you would be hard-pressed to find a standalone home or townhouse in this district!

My favourite thing about the neighbourhood is the mix of cafes, restaurants, cultures and nightlife. I love going to Sankt Hans Torv where there is always a good atmosphere and a short way to the lakes which are very popular amongst people living here. Assitens Kirkegard is a great place to have a picnic and relax with some friends on a nice day. It’s a historic cemetery dating back to the 18th century and is the resting site of many prolific Danes; it also serves as a park, so don’t feel weird about hanging out there! Copenhageners flock to this beautiful area in the summer, it’s big enough that there is always space and you’ll even forget you’re in a city.


Superkilen is a one of a kind park designed by the famous Danish design company, Bjarke Ingels Group. This park incorporates objects from all over the world into a playful and useful space. There is plenty of room to hang out, along with bike paths, ping pong tables, basketball courts, and much more to explore. It’s quite striking, there’s a high chance you’ve unknowingly seen it on Instagram before!




Norrebroparken is a classic park, come here to play some football or chill out. There is a playground and a dog park as well, so it’s quite a popular place!




Copenhagen's lakes are one of the most attractive parts of the city. There are paths surrounding them which are perfect for a stroll or a run (it’s about 6.5km around). On sunny days the lakes are lined with people hanging out and drinking Carlsberg - like good Copenhageners. Be sure to check out the cafes and bars surrounding the lakes too, especially on a rainy day!

There are lots of great streets in Norrebro, but these two are our favourite for picking up on the true Norrebro vibe. Jægersborggade is a small street packed with boutique shops, cafes and restaurants. You could hang out there every weekend and try something different. Blågårdsgade is a pedestrian street with a ton of cafes and shops. This is a great area to cosy up in a cafe with friends or a good book.

Norrebro has an interesting and complicated history, as is often the case in cities' most progressive neighbourhoods. Norrebro hasn’t always been as strong of a community as it is today, and in some ways, it’s still building its cohesiveness. A dive into its history can shed some light on this.

The history of Norrebro dates back to the middle ages, the area has undergone many transformations. It originally existed as farmlands supporting the walled city of Copenhagen. Norrebro, as we know it, started to come together in the mid-1800s. Around that time period, the city lines expanded and there was a rush to build infrastructure and housing. Many of these buildings are still standing today! In the late 1800’s it was a working-class neighbourhood, where many families lived and a number of major industries began to form. Norrebro’s growth continued until the mid-1900s when it reached its peak population of 125,000 residents, which is still significantly higher than today! 

Norrebro’s history as an independent and against-the-grain neighbourhood began during the second world war. During this time period, the resistance movement was run out of Norrebro. This led to ongoing tensions in the neighbourhood and many families were leaving Copenhagen. This led to a fairly sharp decline in the population. Due to this, many stores closed and buildings fell into disrepair. As such, the area faced social challenges which came to a peak in the 1970s and 1980s. Around that same time, Norrebro was undergoing a drastic redevelopment plan. This redevelopment plan led to a new chapter for Norrebro, and the population began to grow again; becoming popular among international citizens and younger Danes. In many ways, the Norrebro we enjoy today began then!


Norrebro is growing and always evolving, true to its roots, it’s still the home to many social movements. This multicultural district remains expressive, and its community continues to grow and spark important discussions in Denmark. You may have read about the area before as it’s the starting point for many progressive national movements. Home to the open-minded, the multicultural, and those who enjoy a neighbourhood in motion!

Østerbro has a strong reputation as a relaxed and refined neighbourhood. It’s home to people in all phases of life, from students to affluent families. If you move to Østerbro you probably won’t be able to guess who your neighbours are until you move in - and we think that’s a beautiful thing! One point residents do have in common is an appreciation for the atmosphere of the area. Many Copenhageners would describe it as being similar to Frederiksberg. This well-planned neighbourhood is home to Copenhagen’s largest park, best cafes, national football team, and so much more. Living in Østerbro means you’ll have a calm spacious environment around you, the perfect blend of countryside peace and downtown city living.

There is something for everyone in Østerbro, it’s spacious, calm, and full of green space - who doesn’t love that? It’s home to 79,000 people and covers an area of 9.8 km. It’s densely populated, but thanks to its great planning there is lots of room for everyone. 

This area of Copenhagen was developed slower than the nearby central neighbourhoods. Therefore the buildings were constructed with stricter codes, paying more attention to natural light and favouring wide streets. These design standards have undoubtedly made a lasting impact on the neighbourhood.

Østerbro is located in the east of Copenhagen, neighbouring Indre By and Nørrebro with tons of coastline and a section of The Lakes too! With a prime location and great connections, it’s simple to zip around to other areas of the city. 

The busiest streets in Østerbro are Østerbrogade and Nordre Frihavnsgade, they meet at a popular junction called Trianglen, close to The Lakes. If you’re looking for a big city feel in Copenhagen, the Trianglen area is the place for you!  



Østerbro is a very appealing residential area, and it attracts all kinds of people. When compared with Copenhagen’s averages, residents of Østerbro have a higher than average disposable income and are 1.5 years older. There are a few large public employers in the area, so it’s likely that many residents are working for the Danish government in some capacity. There are also fewer foreigners living here, with 20% foreign residents compared to the city average of 25%. This area has grown by 18% over the last 15 years and has forecasted much more growth in the future. 


Østerbro has a reputation for being one of the quieter neighbourhoods of Copenhagen, but this doesn’t mean that it’s boring. While it’s true that cafe culture is stronger than the nightlife scene in Østerbro, there are tons of interesting things going on! There are often large events at Fælledparken (and its stadium) such as games, concerts, and festivals. Since it has the biggest park in Copenhagen, it’s a natural place to gather on exciting and important occasions. 

It’s not just a residential area, it’s also home to some significant employers as well! Embassies and offices are scattered around the area, blending in with their surroundings. Though some organizations stand out such as Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen’s main hospital, and an integral United Nations office, the UN City! You can expect that there are plenty of people commuting into the area for work - it’s certainly not empty during the weekdays.

Østerbro can also pack a punch when it comes to cafes, restaurants, and cosy bars. A great place for a laid back evening out; if you’re feeling a party night, the city centre is only minutes away. We imagine residents are thankful for a quieter neighbourhood to come home to whenever their night is winding down.


Østerbro is characterised by beautiful classic Copenhagen apartment buildings. Over half of the buildings in Østerbro were built in the early 1900s and have been well taken care of.  Though it’s a densely populated area, you can find all kinds of housing, with apartment buildings concentrated towards the city centre and standalone homes in the northern areas of Østerbro. It’s an expensive location to purchase property, so it’s not a surprise that only one-fifth of homes are owner-occupied. The diversity in housing options fosters the diversity of the population, with housing for all phases of life. In addition to the older buildings, there are modern buildings as well, particularly concentrated along the oceanfront. Østerbro still has space to build and grow, a quality that is scarce among Copenhagen’s central neighbourhoods!

Bring a blanket and some snacks and settle in for the afternoon! This park has so much going on, it’s a popular gathering place as well as home to the national football team. There is also a large skateboard park and several football fields to play on. If you’re a runner, this is an amazing place for an uninterrupted jog.   


If you thought living in a capital city meant giving up your dream of living near a large sandy beach - we’ve got great news for you! Svanemølle Beach is a beautiful ocean beach in the north of Østerbro. You’ll find many Copenhageners posted up here on a nice day! 




Everyone knows that Danes love coffee and have perfected the cosy cafe. Østerbro is home to some of the best cafes in Copenhagen - so if you live here you will want to make cafe-hopping part of your routine.




Østerbro is full of beautiful streets and parks, you will find something new every time you venture out. Stroll through historical Brumlebyto see some of Østerbro’s oldest homes, and be sure to spend some time on Olufsvej for your dose of cute colourful homes. Walk through Fælledparken, then explore the charming residential streets.

History of the Østerbro

Østerbro's history is similar to the other neighbourhoods surrounding the city centre. Before the 1850s Østerbro was mainly used as a farming area with a few settlements scattered around. These small settlements were often ransacked as they were outside of the fortified city. In the late 1700s, there were some fabric companies, distilleries, and military grounds in the area; a few roadways were developed then that still frame the neighbourhood today.

Østerbro, as it is today, began to form in the mid-1800s as the city of Copenhagen started to expand. Similar to nearby Frederiksberg, Østerbro became popular among affluent Copenhageners who built summer homes in the northern area of Østerbro. The expansion in Østerbro was slower than nearby neighbourhoods, this translated to stricter building codes and more human-centric building design. Which is still appreciated today by the residents of Østerbro. 

Østerbro wasn’t just shaped by the affluent - the working class also played a significant role in the development. One of Denmark’s first social housing projects was built here. The oldest buildings in Østerbro were designed by the Danish medical association in light of the Cholera outbreak. Impoverished families lived in these homes, giving them a safe and healthy environment. Though they are no longer social housing, they are still lived in today, located next to Fælledparken. It’s a highly coveted address for Copenhageners, the waitlist to buy one of these homes is over 20 years long! 

The early 1900’s was a busy time in Østerbro, with lots of construction. Fælledparken was established, Østerbro station was built, and Rigshospitalet was started. This set the tone for the preservation of green space which defines the area nowadays. 

Today the neighbourhood is quite blended, with all kinds of people living there. It has the reputation of being an affluent neighbourhood, but by Copenhagen standards, housing is similarly priced to the rest of the city. Østerbro’s residents are generally quite active both socially and athletically - you will notice this if you live there! It’s home to the worker’s movement, which was established in Fælledparken and still celebrated there annually on May 1st. Whatever parts of city life you enjoy, you can experience it from the comfort of a home base in Østerbro.

Indre By is simply full of life. There is plenty of entertainment, as you would expect in a city centre, but there are also many quiet winding streets. The city centre is home to 55,000 residents and we’re sure each one of them has their own favourite thing about the area. 

As the heart of the city, it’s surrounded by all the main central neighbourhoods and coveted waterfront (both ocean and lake). The Indre By area includes Christianshavn, Holmen, and Refshaleøen as well. Living here means you’re very well connected, a short walk or bike will have you where you need to be. If you ever feel like leaving the city, you’re never far from a train or metro station. All roads lead to Indre By (in Copenhagen at least 😉). 

There are plenty of notable attractions and areas downtown. Some that you’ve probably heard of are Nyhavn, Tivoli, Strøget, and the Round Tower. Palaces, parks, and iconic buildings are plentiful downtown - when you’re there, you’ll quickly realize which locations are touristy and which ones are local hot spots. 

If you’re a newcomer you will be surprised at how close everything is. You can walk from postcard-shot to postcard-shot almost faster than you can take it in. Up until the mid-1800s, the Indre By area was fortified (surrounded by walls) and represented the entirety of Copenhagen. You will find that it has many small districts within it and that it’s packed with history! 



Downtown Copenhagen is a highly sought after place to live! There is a lot of diversity in Indre By, 20% of residents are foreigners. The streets are full of people from all over the world and the international feel is further amplified by tourists! When compared with the rest of Copenhagen residents of Indre By are slightly older than surrounding neighbourhoods. This could be due to the higher price point for housing in this in-demand area. Generally speaking, you will find fewer families living in the city centre and more adults both young and old.


The city centre is full of energy all year round - even on rainy days! Living in Indre By means there will always be something going on, festivals, concerts, and conferences, if it’s happening in Copenhagen, Indre By is probably hosting it! On the weekdays the streets are full of business people, tourists, and locals going about their days. On the weekends you can expect lots of shoppers and people enjoying the best of Copenhagen’s nightlife!

The downtown is full of shops, cafes, and restaurants that draw in people from all over the city - and the world. In fact, over 10 million people visit Copenhagen each year, and this number is growing! With tons of hotels, museums, and other attractions being in the city centre, you can expect plenty of visitors! If tourism is a bit of a turn off for you, don’t fret, Indre By is full of green spaces and pedestrian streets so there is plenty of room for everyone to enjoy without feeling crowded. Indre By is actually home to one of the world's longest pedestrian shopping streets! Since it’s simple to bike, walk, and take transit downtown, this city centre feels relaxing and not congested.  


Indre By is full of winding streets and all kinds of buildings both historical and modern. You will see a lot of the traditional five and six-storey Copenhagen apartment buildings, many with the first floor used as commercial space. Due to zoning laws, there are very few ‘skyscrapers’ in Copenhagen so though there are large offices and malls, they blend in with the city. 

Most residents of Indre By live in these classic apartment buildings; though most interiors have been highly modernised to match the demands of this hot real estate area. Surprisingly, it’s not only apartments available in the city centre - there are also single-family homes! These famous homes were built for workers in the 1800s and are affectionately referred to as the potato row.

To keep up with the ever-growing demand, there are always a handful of new property developments in Indre By, especially in the Holmen area. So the dream of living in Indre By is becoming possible for more people! 

There are many beautiful palaces, castles, and historical buildings to see. Additionally, many architects have made their mark on downtown Copenhagen - if you’re a lover (or appreciator) of architecture, Indre By is the place for you!

There are plenty of things to do in Indre By! Since there are tons of popular attractions in this area, we’re going to focus on the things you might not have heard of yet. If you’re living in Indre By (or just visiting) you will probably be spending a lot of your free time in these places!




On a nice day, there is almost nothing better than sitting by the canals in Copenhagen and watching the boats go by! Grab some coffee or beers and sit alongside Christianshavns Kanal or Frederiksholms Kanal. These canals are super active so there’s lots to see, including homemade raft-style boats full of people having a good time. Not nice weather? No problem there are lots of cafes and bars lining the canals, enjoy the views from inside.


It’s amazing to live in a city where you can swim downtown! Copenhageners know this and take full advantage of it year-round. Check out Ofelia Plads beach for an upbeat vibe and prime swimming location. Or stroll over to Islands Brygge (technically outside of Indre By) for some amazing harbour pools run by the city.




There are many great parks downtown, Kongs Have and Østre Anlæg are among the best! Kongs Have is one of the oldest in Denmark it’s well-manicured, fit for the royals - it’s the King’s garden after all. Østre Anlæg is a bit wilder and will have you forgetting you’re in a city!




Reffen is a large street food market near Holmen that is a staple in most Copenhageners' lives. Full of delicious food vendors from all over the world and there’s almost always some great live music. Located on the outskirts of Indre By, you can get there easily and have the feeling of a city escape. 



Copenhageners flock to the lakes downtown, though you can’t swim there, there’s so much to enjoy. Grab a bottle of wine and sit on Dronning Louises Bro - you’ll be sure to be in good company. 





You may have heard of Christiania, but this list wouldn’t be complete without mentioning it! Christania is an independent community within the inner city and home to about 1000 people. There is a lot of history to Christania which shaped it into the one of a kind community it is today. If you visit, be sure to dine and shop at their local businesses and respect their local rules!

The history of Copenhagen all began here, in Indre By. In fact, what we now know as Indre By used to be the entire city of Copenhagen. For hundreds of years large fortress walls and moats surrounded and protected the area. 

Copenhagen’s roots can be traced back to the middle ages, around 1000 AD, with humble beginnings as a small fishing village named ‘Havn’ (harbour in English). The village grew as its strategic location proved to be beneficial for trade. This prospering village was not without conflict, seeing many battles and raids that came with their share of setbacks. However, the area persevered, eventually becoming the capital of Denmark in 1445. 

This village grew into a city and the foundations of Indre By as we know it today were laid during the renaissance ages. Christian IV was a notable king who significantly influenced Indre By’s layout. He was very interested in building, commissioning many iconic structures that still stand today such as Børsen, the Round Tower, and even building the entire Christianshavn area for Dutch settlers. 

Copenhagen’s fortifications proved to be successful at protecting the city and it continued to grow and prosper. Though the limited space did make it very densely populated. Finally, in the 1850s the ruling king decided to let the city expand and the neighbourhoods we know and love today began to form.  

Today Indre By is very well maintained and remains the centre for commerce, entertainment, and liveliness in Copenhagen. It’s a far cry from a fishing village, but it’s strong appeal as a neighbourhood that Copenhageners dream of living in has not changed over time. Living in Indre By means you can enjoy living amongst historical treasures of the past with all the modern entertainment and conveniences of today!
